SMA students understand that the techniques they will learn can be dangerous. Martial artists do not have the right to hurt anyone else, unless someone is trying to hurt them. Then, they can defend themselves so that they can escape.

Respect

  • Respect will be shown at all times for the dojo, instructors, fellow students, and self.
  • Instructors and black belts are to be addressed as 'Sensei' or 'Senpai' depending on that instructor's rank.
  • All statements to the instructor should end with his or her title.
  • Fellow classmates will also be spoken to with respect.
  • Name-calling and rude remarks are unacceptable behavior for a martial artist.
  • Students will wear proper uniform which is a traditonal white gi displaying only the AIKA federation patch.
  • A plain white t-shirt may be worn under the gi.
  • Shoes are not allowed on the dojo floor.
  • No jewelry is to be worn during class with the exception of flat wedding bands and stud earrings.
  • Fingernails and toenails should be clean and trimmed.

 

Class Conduct

  • Students will report all ailments or injuries to the instructor before class.
  • Students will bow towards the front upon entering and exiting the dojo floor.
  • Classes will begin and end with all students lining up by worn rank.
  • Any time a student enters a class in progress, he will kneel outside the dojo floor until the instrucor bows him in.
  • If a student needs to leave class for any reason, she will ask permission from the instructor.
  • All sparring will be conducted in class with proper gear and supervision.
  • No horseplay is allowed in the dojo.
  • Cell phones and beepers should be turned off or left in the car during class. Special situations can be discussed with Sensei.
  • No contact will be made with the mirrors or walls except to clean them.
  • Students should take care to keep a safe distance from the mirrors and walls at all times unless told otherwise by the instructor.
  • Gym equipment may only be used under proper supervision by an instructor.
