![]() Team AIKATournament Flyer (pdf) We will support and encourage any students who wish to participate in the sport aspect of karate. There is no required rank to compete, tournaments are set up with age and rank divisions starting at 5 year-old white belts. Sensei Mike and Sensei Sue compete in numerous tournaments throughout New England. Any student interested in competition should talk to Sensei and should not attend a tournament without approval. Although karate is an individual sport, we represent SMA and AIKA when at a tournament. We do require all students, including those who do not regularly compete, to take part in 3 specific tournaments each year. The first is our annual AIKA inter-school tournament that is held in New Bedford (usually the first week of February). This is a great first tournament for beginners because the competition is limited to students from our own schools. The 2nd is the Worcester Classic (usually the first week of May), which is promoted by Shihan Mello. This is an open tournament in which competitors will face opponents from a variety of styles. As it is one of the finest tournaments in New England, the level of competition is excellent and it is an event that no one should miss. The 3rd is new to the required tournaments because in 2007, Sterling Martial Arts will host their own tournament for the first time The Central Mass Open in Gardner, MA. This will occur on the first weekend in March. Performance in a tournament is not the best test of one's martial arts abilities. However, much can be learned and gained from the experience. Students will make new friends from different styles, display their skills for an audience outside the dojo, and learn to win and lose in the true spirit of the martial arts.
